Overview:

The Atlantic Veterinary College’s Dr. Tim Ogilvie AVC Vet Camp (AVC Vet Camp) offers a behind-the-scenes peek into the world of veterinary medicine—from doing physical examinations on dogs and horses to learning how to dress like a surgeon and suturing on a silicon suture pad. You will be amazed at what you will see, learn, and do!

Camp activities are planned to ensure a balance of hands-on activities, lectures, labs, and discussions. You will meet some interesting animals, and you will explore the science of animals through sessions on pathology, bacteriology, anatomy, toxicology, and more! You will visit our large- and small-animal hospitals, take a couple of field trips, find out what learning to become a veterinarian involves, and learn how to keep your pets and farm animals healthy.

Testimonial

The following testimonial was submitted by Olivia, from Liverpool, Nova Scotia. They answered the following key questions. Olivia rates this opportunity a 9 out of 10.

What stood out about this opportunity that makes it such a unique experience worthy of being part of The Collection?

This camp was amazing. We were put into real lab experiences where we learned by directing different animals (like fish) to explore anatomy. We looked at different parts of animals bodies such as organs and bones. We also looked into different animal cells and studied them. It was so cool because it was like going to a school put only about veterinary medicine. We even went and visited local farms to learn about their animals, such as horse farms.

What is something a youth applying to this opportunity should know?

Don’t be nervous or scared to apply at all! There are so many other amazing people that you will meet at this camp! Also be prepared to learn a lot!

What was your favourite activity/experience of this opportunity?

My favourite experience had to be going and visiting the horse farm. It was awesome to see these beautiful animals and work with them.
