Overview:

WISE Acadia is dedicated to providing young girls with learning opportunities and mentoring initiatives in STEAM fields. Every July, girls entering grades 7, 8 and 9 are invited to attend our overnight science camp hosted at Acadia University. Attendees will be given the opportunity to experience a variety of activities to engage them in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. In addition, our science camps focus on the ways in which the integration of arts can enhance learning in STEAM education by encouraging students to think creatively and develop unique solutions to problems. Morning and afternoon education sessions focus on fun, hands-on learning activities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Girls are also provided with a popular mentoring session given by female undergraduate students at Acadia, studying a broad spectrum of STEAM subjects. This overnight camp is open to all girls entering grades 7 to 9. Follow us on Facebook for news relating to the next available dates of the science camp!

Testimonial

The following testimonial was submitted by Molly D, a grade 10 student from Digby, Nova Scotia. They answered the following key questions. Molly rated the program a 9 out of 10.

What stood out about this opportunity that makes it such a unique experience worthy of being part of The Collection?

This was a great introduction to the STEM world. The camp explored every single aspect of the STEM world. We went to the beach to look at fossils, cooking, learn about astronomy by star gazing, experiments with misquotes for DNA, learned about kinesiology, observe pound water under microscopes, and observe a sheep’s brain. We also did fun summer camp activities such as mud sliding, made bracelets, and go swimming. We lived in the Acadia dorms and got to experience the life of a university student. It was overall a great place to learn and meet friends I still talk to this day!

What is something a youth applying to this program should know?

Be prepared to make many friends, have fun and learn so much about science. Come with a thirst of knowledge, readiness to participate and excitement! Also bring a water bottle!

What was your favourite activity/experience in program?

We went with a big group of university students who were taking all different majors. We got to ask them questions about their different fields like biology, chemistry, physics and sociology. This was a great change, especially just before high school to talk with students in University on the paths that we want to be on eventually.
