Overview:

This program provides Barrie youth with a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, new friendships, and the unforgettable experience of life in one of our twinned cities. Additionally, those selected have made a further commitment to our city as they serve as host families for the visiting delegations and share their new perspectives with the Barrie community through a series of presentations to sponsors, Council, schools and service clubs. Although this program has expanded to include Germany, China, and in 2023 Arras, France, it began with our very special relationship with Murayama, Japan.'

What stood out about this opportunity that makes it such a unique experience worthy of being part of The Collection?

This opportunity not only helped me to make international connections, but I found close friends who had similar interests to me in my city.

What is something a youth attending this opportunity should know?

You need to be okay with being outside your comfort zone. Almost everything was a little strange, like eating a whole fish (head and all!), but these experiences are what made the trip so special.

What was your favourite activity/experience of the opportunity?

Seeing so many interesting things in Japan, not only from a tourist point of view, but also a local.
